Amb. Mariam Yassin Hagi Yussuf


Amb. Mariam Yassin Hagi Yussuf is a Special Envoy for Children’s and Migrants’ Rights in the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) in the Government of Somalia. Her responsibilities include, advocating for the rights of Somali Children and Migrants at the regional and International levels; working closely with International Organizations, especially IOM offices worldwide to assist Somali migrants and asylum seekers abroad. She is also the National Focal Point for Human Trafficking and Smuggling of Migrants and is responsible for the creation and coordination of the Inter¬‐Ministerial Task Forces on Migration, Human Trafficking and Return and Readmission.

Prior to her appointment in the OPM she was the Executive Director of IIDA Women’s Development Organization, based in Nairobi Kenya; a Programs Coordinator Municipality of Turin, Youth Policy Division, Alouan Intercultural Youth Center, Turin, Italy; Conflict and Cultural Mediator, Italian Social and Health Services Departments, Turin, Italy; and has done substantial research on gender and women issues.

Amb. Yassin has been actively involved with EASSI since 2007 and she brings to the Board leadership broad expertise from the various offices she has held. She is committed to serve the sub-region and ensure the effective representation and participation of the Horn of Africa and in particular Somalia, which has gone through very challenging times with the COVID-19 pandemic. She has also pledged to advocate for the free movement of persons at the African Union (AU) level.
