EASSI in Partnership with the Life and peace Institute (lead agency), ACT!(Act Change Transform) and Inter Africa Group are implementing a three year project titled the "The Improving Policies for Conflict Prevention: Civil Society Engagement to Transform Borderlands in Africa Project. The Improving policies for Conflict Prevention: Civil Society engagement to transform borderlands in Africa” is a three year project supported by the European Union and SIDA.
The overall objective of the project is to increase the participation and contribution of CSOs to ensure continental and regional policies on cross border cooperation in Africa are responsive to the human security priorities of borderland communities. The project will focus on strengthening the capacities, collaborative relationships and influence of CSOs in order to infuse compelling evidence into regional and continental decision-making processes on cross-border cooperation and tackling borderland human security challenges. It further seeks to amplify the interface and horizontal (amongst CSOs) and vertical linkages between continental decision makers, CSOs and communities, and establish relationships between these otherwise physically and symbolically distant groups.
The project covers three (3) cross-border areas, five (5) countries): Moyale area (Ethiopia-Kenya), Kassala-Gedaref area (Sudan-Ethiopia-Eritrea) and Busia (Uganda-Kenya).
It is envisaged that at the end of the three years, the project will have generated political priority for Cross Border Cooperation (CBC) in Africa and increased civil society participation and engagement in policy-processes at the national, regional and continental policy discussions and actions in relation to cross-border collaboration. It is further hoped that the project will make policy makers and states’ actions more responsive to border land human security as enshrined in the Niamey Convention of 2012 on Cross Border Cooperation.
The project is in line with Goal 17 of the SDGs that calls for Promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels. It is also contributes to the achievement of Beijing Platform for Action.
